Discovery Green announces schedule of over 250 events for fall

Discovery Green, the 12-acre park in the heart of Houston, has announced its Fall 2019 programming schedule. The season, which runs from September 1 to November 15, features temporary public art installations, live music, fitness classes, family programs and more. Most activities at Discovery Green are free thanks to contributions from park users, foundations, and sponsors.

“This season, Discovery Green is celebrating Houston’s wealth of culture and trying to connect our community in mind, body and soul,” said Susanne Theis, programming director. “With the beautiful fall weather, two public art installations, events that honor Mexican heritage, and a new concert series, this is an excellent time to spend a day at Discovery Green.”

Through Nov. 3, the Discovery Green Conservancy presents The Shape of Things: Michael Craig-Martin at Discovery Green, a public art installation comprising six monumental sculptures. This is the first Texas exhibition from the renowned British artist, whose colorful, oversized steel forms offer a playful perspective of everyday objects and challenge our perception of space, appearing like line drawings in the air. The works are showcased around Discovery Green’s Kinder Lake and are on view during park hours. Visitors are invited to enjoy special programming throughout the exhibition, including artist-led twilight tours, hands-on crafts and more.

The park celebrates Mexican heritage in two events this fall: México en el Corazón, a performance of traditional ballet folklorico and Mariachi music, presented by the North American Institute for Mexican Advancement; and the second-annual Día de los Muertos, marking the Mexican holiday where families and friends gather to honor those who have passed.

Other fall season highlights include Unplugged at Discovery Green, a music series that challenges bands to rethink and rearrange their songs using only acoustic instruments; Scream on the Green, Discovery Green’s annual Halloween celebration and costume contest; Art @ Discovery Green, an outdoor market featuring fine artists and contemporary craft artisans from Houston and beyond; the launch of Full Moon Fridays, free concerts that showcase the best music of the Gulf Coast; and Fitness in the Park, a series of free workout classes.
