Are you ready to make a New Year’s commitment you can actually keep? Try something new in 2022 instead of sticking with the same old resolutions. Find out how you can refresh your smile, sleep better, and improve your health by scheduling a visit with Dental Designs by Alisa Reed. Imagine the satisfaction you’ll feel when hitting a resolution trifecta and checking these goals off your list!
Often, all it takes are a few little improvements to get a smile you can’t wait to show off. Dr. Reed stays current on the latest advances, offering newer, minimally, or noninvasive approaches to smile enhancement. Options include prepless porcelain veneers (Lumineers and Durathin) and BioClear, a next generation bonding process.
“Our goal is to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible whether we’re improving the aesthetics of a smile, restoring it, or both,” says Dr. Reed. “Prepless porcelain veneers are my favorite restoration for many reasons: since there is minimal drilling on the enamel, we obtain the strongest bond of the veneer to the tooth; there is no numbing needed, and the look
Dr. Reed typically recommends whitening your teeth first. Then she matches the prepless veneer shade, so your “new” smile is sparkling bright. “The beauty of veneers and crowns is they are considered permanent whitening because the shade of the porcelain won’t change whereas tooth enamel darkens over time due to coffee, red wine, and other staining foods,” she explains.
An alternative to traditional veneers, the BioClear process involves using a clear matrix bonding. Dr. Reed uses it to fix gaps between teeth near the gumline known as ‘black triangles,’ close vertical gaps between teeth, restore broken teeth, and reshape small teeth such as peg laterals.
“Unlike traditional veneers that are handmade in a dental lab, BioClear is performed in-office, often in a single visit. A form is placed around the tooth into which composite dental bonding material is poured. The composite literally molds around your tooth to achieve the desired shape and a strong, durable restoration,”
The health of your body and mind relies on getting a good, restorative night’s sleep. If you suffer from loud, chronic snoring, awaken feeling tired, and struggle with daytime sleepiness, you might suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Dr. Reed, working closely with sleep medicine physicians in The Woodlands, creates custom-made oral appliances similar to mouthguards. Worn while you sleep, an appliance may effectively treat mild to moderate OSA without the need to wear a bulky CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) device, which people can find difficult to tolerate.
In some cases, especially when snoring is a primary issue, gentle laser therapy is used to rejuvenate collagen production to support and open the airway. Dr. Reed uses NightLase, a non-ablative soft-tissue laser with an innovative handpiece technology that allows safe, precisely controlled, and optimal delivery of laser pulses to the treatment area.
“NightLase works at the cellular level to naturally produce collagen and gently lift the soft palate,” says Dr. Reed. Patients report good results. One female patient with mild sleep apnea says, “It’s amazing how well I sleep now and how I feel so much better after just three NightLase treatments. I’m thrilled! I had no idea an effective treatment could be this easy.”
We know how important it is to maintain optimal oral health. No one wants to lose teeth due to periodontal disease or sport that long-in-the-tooth look with receding gums. But did you know your oral health and general health are intertwined?
“Your mouth is the gateway to your body and its health,” Dr. Reed explains. “Studies show unhealthy teeth and gums are linked to heart disease, pregnancy complications, Type 2 diabetes, and numerous other serious health issues. Scientific evidence also suggests that maintaining your oral health could be an additional tool to help better control chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.” She adds, “Catching issues earlier, when they usually require less treatment, can help you avoid making more trips to the dentist in the long run.”
Dr. Reed offers various treatment options for gum disease, including laser therapy for periodontitis. Laser treatments address chronic inflammation caused by spaces or openings surrounding the teeth under the gum line that become filled with infection-causing bacteria.
“Your gums should be infection-free as they heal and regenerate, and tighten back up around the teeth,” she explains.
