Defy Your Age!

What is your “Tru Age”?

If you want to know your true age, don’t look at the calendar. The calendar tells you what your chronological (birth) age is, but this number may be far from accurate in defining who you are. Your functional, or as our clinic likes to say, your “Tru Age”, is the biological age of your body’s systems. Given the complexity of the many interacting parts of our physiological make-up, this isn’t a simple number to calculate. Your body is constantly breaking something down or building something up – and it’s your environment and lifestyle choices which will pull the trigger and set your true functional age. Aging is inevitable, but how you age is not! So, investing in your functional health as soon as possible can provide you with the opportunity to know what issues you may face as you get older and how to potentially prevent them through an improved diet and simple lifestyle changes.

My Story

Since childhood, I have always been passionate about seeking answers to complex problems. I believe that the human body can regain health given the right tools. However, it wasn’t until March of 2008 that I had a very personal encounter with my own health – and it was at that moment that I had to put this belief into action! In 2007, I founded Skin MD and Beyond, an aesthetic dermatology clinic, which has received acclaimed recognition nationally throughout our industry. But during that time and for many years prior, I had everything come to a climax. Suffering from exhaustion, pain and autoimmunity issues, I was absolutely depleted, but mentally still in the game. After many tests and consulting with several physicians, I was told that surgery was my only option. Fortunately for me, prior to my degree in Dermatology I had completed a residency in Family Medicine, and remaining Board-Certified, I became my own patient.

When I realized that my body’s own immune system was attacking itself, I became relentless in my pursuit of personal healing. Through Functional Medicine I was able to identify the root causes of my disease process, instead of just treating the symptoms. By addressing the fundamental balance of diet, sleep, metabolism, exercise and hormones, I was able to find the answers and repair the damage without surgery or prescriptions. My unwavering faith in the basic human healing process and my passion for nutrition became instrumental in turning my health around. And, today I am currently in the best health of my life!

“It is evident to me that my journey to heal myself was for the purpose of helping others and so, I am committed to helping people find answers and live vibrantly through Functional Medicine.”

Running on Empty

Many patients come to Tru Age Wellness Center to not only be physically well as they age, but more importantly, to be alert, oriented, and engaged with their friends and family. Their “loss of zest” is all too common in today’s modern world, as most of us are living life completely out of hormonal balance. Unfortunately, after a time, we come to accept the symptoms of this imbalance as “normal”.

Hormones are the most potent chemical messengers in our bodies, telling our body what to do and when. That’s why, when your hormones are out of balance, you may be able to feel the effects, whether it be insomnia, fatigue, brain fog, memory loss, weight gain, hair loss or mood swings. But usually these imbalances are reversible and, when you figure out what created the imbalances – and treat the underlying problem – you find a true solution.

Genetics, Inflammation, and the Environment

As we grow older, everyone becomes more susceptible and more prone to chronic inflammation, which is the root cause of all chronic disease states like diabetes, cancer, dementia, heart disease and arthritis. At Tru Age Wellness Center we focus on Functional Integrative Medicine to improve your “Tru Age” by concentrating on slowing, preventing, or reversing your aging process. We treat each patient as a unique individual and do not address just your disease.

Where the conventional one-size-fits-all approach gives everyone the same medication and treatment for the same diagnosis, we evaluate the mismatch between nutrition, lifestyle and stress management. With integrative science-based health care, we identify your unique environmental and genetic factors that can impact your long-term health, and enhance your body’s own inner and genetic power to defend, maintain and repair itself.

When Food is Poison to your Body

Although it seems “inside”, your gut is your body’s contact with the outside world. Inflammatory foods, medications, infections, stress, environmental chemicals and pollutants – the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is continuously working to defend your body from unwanted substances. All these unwelcome attacks on the intestinal walls can slowly cause a decline in its defense mechanisms and the walls become permeable or “leaky”. Once this break-down occurs, things like undigested food particles cross into the blood. These particles are typically foreign to the body and this creates an immune response. When we continue to eat foods that contain those same particles, we get chronic inflammation that affects the entire body. Nearly 80% of your immune system is housed in your gut, so when we say the gut is the gateway to health, we mean it!

How to Heal Your Leaky Gut

At Tru Age Wellness Center, we use the 4R Approach to healing the gut and your digestion.

1. REMOVE the Bad. The goal is to eliminate the triggers that negatively affect the environment of your GI tract, such as inflammatory and toxic foods, and intestinal infections.

2. REPLACE with Good. Using simple and effective dietary changes and targeted supplements you can re-establish your gut’s healthy balance of good bacteria to build back your immune system.

3. REPAIR your Deficiencies. It is essential to provide the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals necessary to help the gut repair itself.

4. RESTORE the Essential Healing Elements.  For proper digestion and absorption, your GI system needs digestive enzymes, amino acids and bile acids.

It’s been estimated that 3 in 4 people have some form of food intolerance. If you suspect you are affected, then it is important to remove the foods and heal your gut. So, you can have a healthier and happier life!

A Personal Note from Dr. Fiona Wright

I have seen the frustrating and crippling effects of functional imbalances of medication usage, improper hormones, gut dysfunction and food sensitivities first-hand in my clinic. I have seen the incredible transformation that patients experience after finally getting the help and guidance they need. When the gut is healed, hormones returned to a healthy state of equilibrium, and body balance is restored, I’ve witnessed the renewal of energy and vitality, the return of mental clarity and have seen chronic symptoms fade away. If I can offer one piece of advice, it’s this. Investing in a personalized functional health program gives you the power of information and the knowledge that you are making the right changes for you, not for anyone else. So, Invest in You and get on the Path Toward Wellness Today!
