DWI Expert. Aggressive Legal Representation. Personalized Attention.
Most people don’t dream of becoming a nationally recognized, highly lauded DWI defense attorney when they grow up. Deandra Grant, Managing Partner at Hamilton Grant Attorneys at Law, didn’t either, but participating in a mock trial in high school planted a seed that eventually set her on this path.
“It was a U.N. trial re-enactment, and I was the neutral, Swiss judge,” Deandra says. “I went home and told my parents I wanted to be a judge. When I was getting my undergraduate degree at Trinity University in San Antonio, my dad reminded me of this and suggested that I continue on to law school.”
The rest is history. Deandra earned her Juris Doctorate from SMU Dedman School of Law in 1993. During her third year in law school, she interned for the Dallas County District Attorney’s office. They hired her after she graduated, and she primarily focused on DWI cases. After a year, she opened her private law firm.
Deandra’s firm merged with another in 2018, and they acquired a third firm, creating Hamilton Grant Attorneys at Law. “Our clients benefit from the size, breadth, and depth of the Hamilton Grant team. We discuss every case at a weekly team meeting and brainstorm together. When you choose our firm, you have the experience of an entire team behind you.”
Focused on DWI Defense
Although Deandra has represented a wide range of criminal cases, today she focuses solely on the defense of intoxication-related crimes. Renowned for her extraordinary expertise inside and outside the courtroom, she is one of our nation’s premier DWI defense attorneys. Her clients also benefit from her days as a DWI prosecutor, as she is highly skilled in countering prosecutors’ evidence and strategies.
“DWI cases are some of the most challenging because of the many variables and outside factors. There’s something different every day, and clients come from all walks of life. Each client is unique, and so is their situation,” Deandra explained. She adds, “We’re seeing more cases where people are charged with DWI when they haven’t been drinking due to taking prescribed medications.”
Expanding Her Knowledge Base
As Deandra immersed herself in DWI defense, she launched a personal quest to gain scientific knowledge about alcohol intoxication and the technology used to detect it. She has spent hundreds of hours in DWI defense-related training programs and courses. With her extensive knowledge and experience, she is a national speaker and teacher on topics including DWI jury selection, cross-examination, trial skills, field sobriety tests, and forensic breath and blood alcohol testing.
Deandra’s education includes, but is not limited to:
- A graduate certificate in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine
- A Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Science with a concentration in forensic science from the University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy
- FSA (Forensic Sobriety Assessment)-certified
- Completed the Intoxilyzer 5000 operator certification course, the breath-test machine formerly used in Texas
- Completed the certification course to administer standardized field sobriety tests (SFST)
- Completed the SFST Instructor course and has taught the SFST practitioner course to other attorneys
- Completed coursework on DWI forensic blood and urine testing
She is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and earned the ACH-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist designation.
She is currently the Executive Director, a Charter Member, and President-Emeritus of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association.
