Even as a young girl, Dr. Codi Wiener had a caregiver’s disposition. Her friends and classmates would hurt themselves and always seemed to rush to her for help. “I had a knack for staying calm,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to be able to help someone.”

That mindset led her to pursue a degree in medicine; a path she originally thought would lead to either plastic surgery or neurosurgery. Dr. Wiener, originally from Fort Worth, Texas, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Upon graduation, she joined the Peace Corps at age 21 and everything changed. “Right after college, I went to Ecuador,” Dr. Wiener said. “Within a month, I was assisting a midwife with deliveries.” For the next two and a half years, she would help deliver 19 babies while working as a proponent for women’s health and sex education.

Dr. Wiener also attributes her time spent in the Peace Corps for igniting her enthusiasm for women’s health education—a cause she still feels passionate about today. “I went into a community that was foreign to me and was expected to teach the local residents about a variety of health-related subjects,” she said. “Today my philosophy is: the patient is the boss and her health and satisfaction are my number one priorities. My goal is to empower women by the knowledge that’s given to them. If they’re educated about their bodies and how they work, their health improves as a result.”

Upon her return from the Peace Corp, Dr. Wiener entered medical school and obtained her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio with honors as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha.  “While in Ecuador, all of my field work was in rural women’s health, so when I returned to the U.S., I entered medical school with an open mind,” Dr. Wiener said. During her surgery rotation, she performed numerous appendectomies and abdominal surgeries, but it wasn’t until her obstetrics and gynecology rotation that she became more focused in her pursuit. “During my ob-gyn rotation, I would come in early and stay late. Clearly I had found my passion.”

Dr. Codi Wiener’s credentials include:

  • Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Fellow of American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Alpha Omega Alpha honors from the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio
  • Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland
  • Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, where she focused on laparoscopic and robotic surgical procedures

After completing medical school, Dr. Wiener was accepted into the Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where she delivered over 500 babies and performed over 300 gynecologic surgeries, including laparoscopic and robotic procedures.

Additionally, Dr. Wiener also completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, where she focused on laparoscopic and robotic surgical procedures. “I felt it was important to further specialize in advanced gynecologic surgery as these techniques allow me to provide the best options for my patients to minimize downtime and post-operative pain.”

While gynecologic surgeries might seem routine—hysterectomies, ovarian removals and cysts—Dr. Wiener finds each surgery unique. “No two women have the same anatomy,” she said, “so even though you know the science backward and forward, you still have to think on your feet.” Dr. Wiener credits her father’s engineering genes for her dexterity and surgical instincts. “I’m pretty sure he contributed to my ingenuity.”

Dr. Wiener is now a practicing physician at the Women’s Specialists of Houston, where she specializes in general obstetrics and gynecology with a focus on laparoscopic and robotic surgical procedures. She recently became a new mom and says “My daughter has changed both my priorities and my perspective; I have a better understanding now of my patients.”
