Club Pilates Memorial— that boutique studio tucked in the corner of a Memorial Drive retail center — continues to thrive no matter what challenges it encounters. Perseverance and hard work have allowed owners Elisa Pontone and her brother, Nate Hunt, to power through major road reconstruction, Hurricane Harvey, a pandemic, and a deep freeze. Through it all, they continued to focus on their number one priority, their clients. “They’re our rock stars,” Elisa says, appreciating each one and referring to them as a closely-knit, caring family. “It’s really a unique atmosphere here at the Memorial location,” she explains. “Everyone is inclusive, friendly,
and a source of accountability and support for each other.”

A Community of Friendship

Elisa’s group of loyal members and incredible staff attest to the many benefits of Pilates. CP member Shelley Malone recently celebrated 1,000 classes on the same day Club Pilates Memorial celebrated their six-year anniversary. Shelley has been a member for two years and admits, “I just got hooked and couldn’t stop.” Prior to Shelley’s first class, she couldn’t bend over to tie her own shoes. “Now I can see my biceps and all my muscles,” she says. Her significant weight loss is a testament to the CP program. She received wonderful support and encouragement from her CP family of friends. “The Memorial CP members are non-judgmental and so welcoming.”

CP is my happy place,” she says. “I have such high regards for Elisa and her staff. They went above and beyond for their members.” The studio upheld their services throughout the pandemic with a series of class videos led by instructors. “The variety of classes challenge me, and I’m never bored. Stretching, purposeful breathing, flexibility, and strength building during class has helped prevent tennis injuries.”

After class, everyone gathered outside to visit, but they decided meeting for lunch would be more fun. Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen was the group’s destination of choice, meeting the first Tuesday of every month. The restaurant’s owner, Sylvia Casares, has been a CP member since 2016. “I needed to exercise but couldn’t find anything I enjoyed or that produced results,” she explains. “Going to Club Pilates was the first time in my life I’ve enjoyed exercising.” The program has benefitted Sylvia emotionally and physically, allowing her to make new friends and boost her self-esteem. “I look and feel healthier. It’s really made a difference.”

Ray Chavers had no time to himself as his mother’s caregiver. He allowed his needs to take a backseat to his mother’s. At the urging of his wife, Linda, he finally realized it was time to try something new. Linda was already a CP Memorial member, so Ray followed her lead. He’s attended class five days a week for the past six years, losing 40 lbs. but gaining improved breathing, strength, and reduced snoring. “I like the program because every class is a different experience, and each instructor has their own style,” he says. “It’s a very friendly community.”

Linda Chavers is a devoted school teacher and tennis player, using CP for her tennis warmup. “CP is my happy place,” she says. “I have such high regards for Elisa and her staff. They went above and beyond for their members.” The studio upheld their services throughout the pandemic with a series of class videos led by instructors. “The variety of classes challenge me, and I’m never bored. Stretching, purposeful breathing, flexibility, and strength building during class has helped prevent tennis injuries.” And Linda can’t hear Ray snore any more thanks to his mindful breathing.

Pilates aids in calming your mind and curbs depression, stress, and anxiety. Seven signature classes are offered at three different locations and guarantee a full mind/body workout each session. “When your body and mind are in sync, you’re incorporating the breath, core connection, alignment awareness, and utilizing all principles to help achieve a stronger, longer life,” Elisa says. Whether you’re a beginner, an advanced athlete, or rehabilitating from an injury, there’s a Club Pilates Memorial class for you.
