Campfire Cocktails

There’s nothing that goes together with the cool onset of autumn quite like a campfire with friends and family. Whether it’s actually tented-up in the great outdoors or just around the homestead firepit, this small batch of camping-inspired libations will be sure to keep you just as toasty on the inside as you’re feeling on the outside, with only a few small extras tossed into the camping chest.

Hot Mint Chocolate Toddy

  • 1 pouch hot cocoa mix
  • 6 ounces water or milk
  • 1 ounce Irish cream
  • 1 ounce peppermint schnapps
  • small marshmallows, to taste
  • cinnamon stick, optional

» Using hot cocoa as a base can’t be wrong. Prepare the cocoa as usual, by boiling the water and adding it to the cocoa mix, stirring well. Stir in the Irish cream and peppermint schnapps, then top with marshmallows and garnish with a cinnamon stick for a little bit of fall spice.

 Fireside Old Fashioned

  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2-3 dashes of bitters
  • 2 ounces Wyoming Whiskey small batch bourbon
  • 1 ice cube, optional

» As time passes, the Old Fashioned often becomes new-fashioned with soda and fruit garnishes, so let’s take this classic back to its roots, streamlined for campsite preparation. Drop a little bit of sugar into your cup, then shake a couple of dashes of bitters on top of that and stir till it’s mixed. Angostura is the classic here. Finally, in goes the whiskey. A nice bourbon, such as a small-batch Wyoming Whiskey, will add a round, mellow taste that goes perfectly with the fire, no garnishment needed. Plunk in an ice cube if you’ve got any handy!

Hot Spiced Cider 

  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 2 or 3 whole cloves
  • a dash of ground nutmeg
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp rum
  • 1 or 2 red hot candies, optional

» In a small pan, boil your apple cider with the cloves, ground nutmeg, and cinnamon stick, then let it simmer for ten minutes or so. Remove the cloves and cinnamon stick, and pour the mixture into your cup. Add the rum and brown sugar, toss in the red hot candies if you have them, and stir.
