Baylor Scott & White – McKinney: Growing With The Community

BSW - McKinney Expands To Nearly 200 Beds

As the nation rang in the 21st century, McKinney, Texas had something else to celebrate — a booming population that more than doubled in 10 years. Back then residents wondered just how long the growth spurt would continue, but chances are, they wouldn’t have guessed the new heights McKinney would reach. In 2014 the town was chosen by Money Magazine as the #1 Best Place to Live in the United States. Now, with over 214,000 residents, McKinney is the 111th largest city in the United States — and still growing.

When Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – McKinney opened in 2012, it quickly became known as a trusted, community-based hospital where each patient receives quality, coordinated care in a healing environment. At the same time, the new hospital which had 95 beds, was poised to keep pace with the town’s rapid growth and anticipate the future needs of the Greater McKinney community. In fact, expansion plans began right after it opened and have been ongoing ever since. An ER build-out began immediately, doubling in size in 2014. The fifth floor was built out the following year and a second physician office building was added. In 2019, Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital McKinney, joint ownership with physicians, part of Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano opened in McKinney, bringing advanced, personalized, nationally-recognized cardiovascular care to the community.

Today, the hospital continues its legacy of innovation, expansion, and continual improvement. It just completed a 48-patient bed expansion on the 4th floor — 24 dedicated to oncology and 24 for orthopedics, bringing the hospital’s total bed count to 191. “We not only keep pace with growth in the area but constantly envision the future needs of the community and plan ahead, so we’ll be ready when the time comes,” says Baylor Scott & White – McKinney President and CEO Erin Blair. Like much of the hospital’s staff, Erin lives in McKinney, along with her husband and their two children. As a McKinney resident, she feels a calling to take care of the community through providing quality healthcare.

More Space for the Orthopedics and Oncology Programs

“We’re excited to add room to accommodate more patients in oncology and orthopedics, and to address the growing demand for our Total Joint Program,” Ms. Blair says. “And the orthopedics program on the 4th floor includes a dedicated physical rehabilitation gym to support recovery for those patients.”The orthopedics program also includes a multi-specialty medical staff on campus to meet your orthopedic needs, including a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician. The specialized sports medicine program is for athletes of all ages and activity levels.

Bringing advanced cancer care to the community is another commitment the hospital has made, and oncology services have been enhanced to best serve these patients. Patients can expect innovative treatment options, comprehensive care, and advanced cancer detection and prevention programs. Nurse navigators serve as educators, advocates, and guides to their patients and families, helping them navigate through their cancer care journey every step of the way.

Baylor Scott & White Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center – McKinney is nationally accredited for advanced cancer care by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Achieving this accreditation supports patients receiving comprehensive, patient-centered care through a multidisciplinary team-approach, access to information on clinical and new treatment options, ongoing monitoring of care and lifelong patient follow-up, support and survivorship care, and continuous quality improvements in care.

“We offer many robust programs at Baylor Scott & White – McKinney, including obstetrics and labor and delivery, and are currently expanding our 2nd floor for mothers and babies,” Ms. Blair shares. The 2nd floor of the hospital houses a Level 3 maternal care center for higher-risk pregnancies, and the NICU was recently re-designated as a Level 3 NICU. Providing continuous life support and comprehensive care, our Level 3 NICU can treat infants born at 23 weeks gestational age and above, as well as critically ill newborns of any gestational age.

An Eye on the Future

When asked what’s on the horizon for Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – McKinney, Ms. Blair answered, “We always have something new we’re working on and look forward to continue serving the community as it grows and develops. We have the space for up to a total of 400 beds — just over double what we have now — and have the ability to enhance and add services that will benefit our community well into the future.”
