Quality Emergency Healthcare, Focus on Patient Safety

Medical emergencies don’t wait for a pandemic to subside, either. The last thing you should do is jeopardize your health, and possibly your life, by not seeking medical care when you need it. When you visit a BSW emergency department, you can rest assured your safety and health are a top priority. Baylor Scott & White Health has implemented new preventative Safe Care measures and innovative offerings designed to protect patients and team members across the state. You can learn more about the Safe Care plan at BSWHealth.com/SafeCare.

“We’ve been handling COVID-19 for more than nine months now with an intense focus on staff and patient safety,” says Dr. David Arai, medical director of the emergency department at BSW Medical Center – Frisco.

Dr. William Fox, emergency room medical director at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Centennial, adds, “At the same time, we’re sensitive to family and patient needs, and strive to offer a balanced solution. Although we can’t guarantee we can allow access to family members in all cases, we strive to do so when possible.”

BSW – Centennial was designated a Level III emergency trauma center in January 2020. “Not every patient needs a Level I trauma center. First responders assess patients in the field and determine the most appropriate place  to take them, which helps our emergency departments manage patient wait times,” Dr. Fox explains. BSW Medical Center – Centennial and BSW Medical Center – Frisco are located just a few miles apart, giving emergency responders and patients more choices and flexibility.

Dr. Alan Weier, emergency department medical director at BSW Medical Center – Plano, says its ED team actively works to minimize patient wait times, too. “Seeing patients in the shortest amount of time possible for diagnosis and treatment is a priority for us all,” he says.

BSW Medical Center – Plano is certified as a Level I comprehensive stroke center, recognized for its ability to treat the most complex stroke cases. “When suffering a stroke, the sooner you receive medical attention, the better the chances of recovery. It’s imperative to get to an ED as soon as possible,” says Dr. Weier. Stroke symptoms include but are not limited to sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech, difficulty walking, dizziness, or lack of coordination.

Don’t Downplay Symptoms. Head to the Emergency Department.

Sometimes it’s obvious a situation warrants a visit to the emergency department, including signs and symptoms of stroke and heart attack, deep lacerations, uncontrolled bleeding, fractures, intense abdominal pain, and more. But sometimes it’s not as obvious. For example, instead of gripping chest pain, women’s heart attack symptoms can mimic conditions like acid reflux or the flu. If you’re uncertain whether or not to go to the emergency room, don’t take a chance. Head to an emergency department for an evaluation.
