Have you driven past Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Irving lately? You can’t help but notice the exterior changes made during the center’s $170M renovation and expansion. And now, with the completion of the new six-story patient bed tower, the project has reached its culmination.

“We’re thrilled to complete the final phase of this complex, multi-faceted project. Inside, we’ve leveraged technology and innovation that enables us to provide better patient-centered care and enhanced patient experiences. It also offers many advantages to our healthcare providers by supporting greater ease of care delivery,” says President, Baylor Scott & White – Irving, Cindy Schamp.

The new facade includes a modern architectural glass atrium called “The Point” with an inspirational illuminated halo light structure that welcomes patients and visitors entering the light-filled, open atrium. Symbolically, it represents the patient as the point of everything the medical center does and, fundamentally, why it exists. As for the new tower, four stories will be initially used, with two remaining for future expansion.

Along with the renovation and expansion, new and enhanced services have been added, including:

  • New catheterization, electrophysiology, and GI labs
  • Beautifully appointed mother-baby rooms and labor and delivery suites
  • Expanded surgical services and day-surgery patient suites
  • Digital displays of the patient care plan, scheduled tests, and more
  • Digital tools such as digital wall plates that notify staff of patients’ special needs

It’s a blessing and a privilege for us to offer more healing, comfort, and amenities for our patients and their families and to provide innovative tools and technologies for our staff. Every piece came together to create a perfect picture by uniquely blending design aesthetics, advanced technology, and functionality.” –Baylor Scott & White – Irving President, Cindy Schamp

Innovative Design Elements and Smart Technology Facilitate Care

From traffic flows and high-tech patient monitoring systems to in-room amenities, comfortable furniture, and layouts, every little detail in the new tower was carefully thought through. Input was obtained from the architects and designers as well as the hospital administration and staff.

“Our goal was to create a space that provides greater efficiency for our hospital staff and medical teams as well as an environment for our patients that’s more conducive to healing,” Schamp explains. “We’re so happy with the results.”

One of the design elements that supports greater efficiency and a more seamless workflow is grouping the floors into four “neighborhoods,” each with its own supplies and equipment room. “Instead of one large room in the center of the floor for supplies and equipment such as DME and oxygen, each neighborhood has its own. This way, staff have everything they need in a handy location near the patients they’re caring for,” says Chief Operating Officer Nikoma Wolf.

From a technology perspective, caregivers are equipped with computers to access patient charts and input notes quickly and easily. “This technology allows our nursing team members to spend more time with patients,” says Chief Nursing Officer Scott Williams. “The floor layout is also designed with safety and care delivery in mind. We have convenient access to every room and patient from the nurses’ station.”

“Our goal was to identify every issue and barrier and then address them,” Schamp adds. “We even built a full cardboard mock-up of a patient room and asked our staff to pick it apart and share their candid input. It’s amazing how even little details make a big difference. We made 14 changes to the original design based on their observations and suggestions.”
