Many men and women choose to study medicine because they dream of helping people. John Drkulec has been able to make that dream a reality. As an orthopedic surgeon, he spends his days providing adults and children with sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, joint replacement and reconstruction, and compassionate care of bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. With a physician father and five older siblings in healthcare professions, medicine was a natural choice for John. “It led to many interesting discussions around our family dinner table on a nightly basis,” he said. “My father’s own medical practice and his commitment to serving our community inspired me from a young age to become a physician myself. And I’m happy to report I truly love what I do every day.”
Having spent a lot of time involved in sports growing up, athletic injuries were a natural interest for him. “At the age of 18, I experienced a devastating knee injury, an ACL tear, which led to my passion for orthopedics, and sports medicine in particular,” he said. This first-hand experience motivates him to give his patients the very best treatment and care available. “Whether they’re competitive athletes or a social participants, I want to help my patients return to the active lifestyle they enjoy,” he said.
It’s important to Dr. Drkulec that, from the first consultation and with every appointment throughout their treatment, his patients see him personally at each visit. “Every patient’s problems and concerns are important to me,” he said. “My father taught me to treat each and every patient in a way that I would want my own family member to be treated. And running my practice in a personalized manner has helped ensure successful outcomes for my patients.”
Dr. Drkulec obtained his pre-med degree from University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada and his medical degree from University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at University of Western Ontario, Fowler / Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic, London, Ontario, Canada. He is Board-certified in both the United States and Canada.
When not on the job, Dr. Drkulec enjoys unwinding with his wife and kids. “Our three teenage boys have certainly kept us busy, whether coaching their soccer and basketball teams when they were younger, or traveling for their hockey tournaments. During his time away from the office, you can find Dr. Drkulec walking his two rescue dogs around his Mansfield neighborhood, or cheering on his favorite hockey team, the Dallas Stars.
A firm believer in giving back to the community that’s given so much to his family, for the past nine years, Dr. Drkulec has donated his time every Friday night at Mansfield’s Newsom or Anderson Stadium for high school varsity football games, providing medical coverage for young athletes. He is also on the Board of Directors for Arlington Orthopedic Associates and has been head of the Orthopedic Department at Mansfield Methodist Medical Center since its inception. He is now accepting new patients at Arlington Orthopedic. Call (817) 375-5200 or visit ArlingtonOrtho.com for more information.
