Dr. Mark Olmstead of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Associates is the only board-certified allergist/immunologist in the Rockwall area. In practice for 25 years, he works every day to establish open and trusting relationships with his patients. Dr. Olmstead believes that the relationship between a physician and a patient is vital to the healing process, which is why he focuses on providing compassionate and empathetic care for each patient.
Wheter individuals suffer from allergies, asthma, or other immune disorders, they can turn to Dr. Olmstead and know they’re receiving the highest quality care. His interest in allergy and immunology began in undergraduate school at Oklahoma Christian University after taking a course in immunology. Leading to a Master’s degree in microbiology and immunology then to medical school at Oklahoma state University College of osteopathic medicine. When he took an immunology course, he was captivated by how the human body works and protects itself. “I took this love for immunology into residency, where I realized there was a fellowship in allergy and immunology,” says Dr. Olmstead. “It allowed me to stay in such a compelling field as immunology, which spans rheumatological diseases to cancer.”
Dr. Olmstead completed a general rotating internship at Tulsa Regional Medical Center and Internal Medicine residency at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic followed by an Allergy/Immunology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. For more than 20 years, Dr. Olmstead has been affiliated with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He is currently tenured as a clinical assistant professor in the division of Allergy and Immunology. He enjoys teaching future allergists, residents, and medical students. Dr. Olmstead has also spoken throughout the country on asthma and allergic rhinitis and previously served on the Board of Directors for the North Texas Allergy and Asthma Foundation for 10 years, and the Texas Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology for four years.
A Commitment to Compassionate Care
Dr. Omstead is passionate about helping people live healthier and fuller lives. He doesn’t want anyone to suffer with poorly controlled asthma, atopic dermatitis/eczema, chronic hives or an everyday stuffy nose. Instead, he encourages individuals to seek help when allergies or asthma start affecting their quality of life. “When you have allergies, you can’t always enjoy time with family and friends or being outdoors,” he says. “I find it fulfilling to help people achieve their greatest health and the best quality of life.”
Some people have more severe asthma, eczema, and hives which can be very disruptive to their daily life. The practice offers biologics, which are injectable medications that target specific areas of the immune system. Dr. Olmstead explains that biologics can make a huge impact on these allergic diseases giving them the opportunity for a more normal life.
“There’s an exploding field of biologics that target specific areas of the immune system which are adversely affecting a patient. With an inhaled daily controller medication or need for more than 2 rounds of oral or injectable corticosteroids, we can make a huge impact with biologics,” Dr. Olmstead says. “Through biologics, we can give people control over their asthma, eczema, or hives. We can help them significantly improve their quality of life.”
In addition to traditional allergy injections, the practice also offers sublingual immunotherapy, which are allergy drops or tablets that induce tolerance to a specific allergy/allergen. “There is a broad range of medications and treatments that we didn’t have just five years ago,” he says. “And as a board-certified allergist and immunologist with 25 years of experience and expertise, we can provide to our community the opportunity for the most comprehensive care of anybody who professes to do allergy treatments in the area.”
Specialized Treatment in A Comforting Environment
Dr. Olmstead cares for patients of all ages, including infants and the elderly population. He often works with children who suffer from debilitating eczema. “We can make such a huge impact on the child and the family,” he says.
When it comes to asthma, Dr. Olmstead explains that anyone who is asthmatic is more likely to have an allergies. “Asthma can significantly impact patients and families and is the most chronic disease in children,” he says. “By improving allergies, you can improve asthma control.”
At Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Associates, patients can be tested for allergies with a simple in-office skin test. In these cases, a small amount of a specific allergen or allergens are introduced through an indention (or a prick) on the surface of the skin. Results are available in just minutes, allowing Dr. Olmstead to develop an effective treatment plan immediately. He can also perform blood tests checking for specific IgE reactions when medications or skin conditions prevent skin testing.
Some individuals aren’t sure whether their congestion, cough, and headache are due to allergies or if they have a sinus infection. The symptoms are often similar and can last all year or months at a time. Dr. Olmstead can help define the cause of the symptoms by evaluating the patient’s medical history, performing a physical exam, conducting allergy testing, and when necessary, getting specialized CT scan imaging.
Dr. Olmstead can also help patients who experience food allergy symptoms, from hives, eczema, and wheezing to severe anaphylaxis. While food allergy symptoms typically occur in babies and children, they can appear at any age. Dr. Olmstead notes that peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish can cause severe food allergies. Those who experience adverse reactions to certain foods can benefit from a specific treatment and management plan. On January 31, 2020, the FDA approved the first oral immunotherapy treatment for peanut allergy.
Many patients have already experienced life-changing results at Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Associates. The practice has earned a perfect five-star rating on Google, with one patient commenting, “So thankful for this office and staff!” Patients can even enjoy a phenomenal view of Lake Ray Hubbard and the Dallas skyline when they come in. Dr. Olmstead says, “the scenic view is very nice and especially when I’m running behind.”
Dr. Olmstead and his wife, Sherry, count their family of seven children and eight grandchildren a tremendous blessing. When he’s not helping his office patients, he is serving in the community and is on the faculty at Parkland Asthma Clinic.
