Steve Duffy, MD, FACS, Chris Cottrell, MD, FACS and Elizabeth Rogers, MD

The highly skilled and experienced team of general surgeons at Advanced Surgical of North Texas provides acute surgical care and a full spectrum of minimally invasive, advanced robotic procedures in McKinney. Drs. Steve Duffy, Chris Cottrell, and Elizabeth Rogers treat a broad range of conditions, including gallbladder, colorectal, hernia repair, and weight-loss surgeries. In addition, specializations in thyroid, reflux, skin infections, appendicitis, and pilonidal disease enable this group of surgeons to be considered a topnotch, trustworthy team of professionals fully dedicated to their patients’ care and wellness.

Minimally Invasive, Advanced Robotic Surgery Experts

Minimally invasive procedures are performed whenever possible, using the state-of-the-art da Vinci Surgical System. “Our team is among the busiest in the North Texas area, performing more than 2,500 combined surgeries between the three of us,” Dr. Duffy says. “Our patients feel confident trusting us when more advanced minimally invasive surgeries are required.” Advanced procedures include colon resections, and stomach, reflux, and spleen surgeries.

Robotic Surgery: What are the Advantages?

The use of cutting-edge robotic surgery allows quicker recovery times for patients with less pain and fewer incisions. “Robotics allows us to be more ergonomic as surgeons,” Dr. Cottrell says. “We can perform longer surgeries with less stress on the body.” An excellent example is colorectal surgery, where normal recovery time with open surgery is seven days, compared to a two-day recovery with robotic surgery. “It’s a healthier choice and more beneficial for the patient, allowing them to return to normal activities sooner,” Dr. Duffy explains.

A Unique Practice Model

The team at Advanced Surgical of North Texas is committed to integrity, sincerity, and open communication in their doctor-patient relationships. They consider patients as partners in their own healthcare. “Our unique practice model makes it possible for patients to be seen in a rapid fashion,” Dr. Cottrell says. “We evaluate and treat acute patients quickly, and we take time to actively listen and address every patient’s concerns so they can make an informed treatment decision.”

The team’s thorough approach includes the use of white boards in every room to draw detailed diagrams that illustrate and explain surgical options and procedures. Each doctor welcomes questions, note-taking, and having a family member or close friend at the appointment to help reduce anxiety that’s often present when facing surgery.

Meet the Team of Surgical Experts

Drs. Duffy, Cottrell, and Rogers are board-certified surgeons striving for excellence in all aspects of their practice, from compassionate care to outstanding surgical skills using
leading-edge technology.

Dr. Steve Duffy founded Advanced Surgical of North Texas in 2015. He approaches patients like they were members of his own family. His honesty and sincerity play a large part in successful communication with his patients. After examination and evaluation of a patient, Dr. Duffy admits, “Surgery is not recommended for nearly one-third of the patients I see. It’s satisfying to take pride in being transparent, knowing we’re doing what’s right for each patient.”

He performs a wide range of procedures, including advanced hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction, colorectal, and GI surgery, among others. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from The University of Texas at Dallas, and his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, graduating with honors. His surgical residency was completed at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Formerly a trauma and general surgeon in the Air Force, Dr. Duffy is attempting to be a proficient guitar player. He and his wife have been married for 25 years and have an 11-year-old daughter.

Dr. Chris Cottrell joined the practice in 2018. A self-proclaimed computer geek, he likes tinkering with anything that has a microchip. In addition to building computers, he enjoys taping his podcast, “Dr. Chris the Surgery Guy” when time permits. He is one of only a few surgeons in the area who performs the trans-oral, incisionless fundoplication (TIF) procedure for acid reflux. Dr. Cottrell received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, graduating medical school near the top of his class. He completed his general surgery residency at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado, where he was named outstanding resident of the year. He practiced surgery in various locations throughout the Dallas area, twice serving as chief of staff at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Lake Pointe, and chairing the credentials committee for four years. His medical interests include reflux surgery and minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System. Dr. Cottrell and his wife have two teenage children and enjoy spending time together as a family.

Dr. Elizabeth Rogers is a general surgeon who joined the team in August 2021. Originally from Florida, she completed her undergraduate training at Johns Hopkins University. She attended medical school at the University of South Florida and completed general surgery residency at The University of Texas Health, San Antonio. She graduated in 2021 and was awarded for outstanding clinical excellence. In addition to general surgery, she performs minimally invasive and robotic abdominal surgeries. Besides reading and traveling, Dr. Rogers enjoys hiking with her little dog, Poppy, safely tucked in her backpack.

Both Drs. Duffy and Cottrell agree – numerous years of experience sets their team apart from other surgical groups. For the highest degree of personalized care in general and specialized surgery, Advanced Surgical of North Texas offers immeasurable experience and technologically advanced surgical options using minimally invasive robotics for improved patient outcomes.
