Collaborative Approach, Customized Treatment Options
Collaboration and teamwork abound throughout the practice, with sub-specialists and staff offering a close continuum of care for their patients. Along with this, they offer
total solutions in spine care with breakthrough non-surgical and surgical options, including minimally invasive spine surgery.
Meet the NTO Spine Specialists
Michael Briseño, MD, FAAOS completed his surgical internship and orthopedic residency at Stanford University in California, followed by a spine fellowship at Harvard Medical School at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He performs minimally invasive spine surgery, spinal decompression, spine fusion, deformity correction, artificial disc replacement, and addresses both spine and general orthopedic trauma.
Known for his extraordinary surgical skill and reassuring bedside manner, Dr. Briseño views spine surgery as a last resort after conservative treatment options have been exhausted, unless a patient’s condition warrants surgery first. When surgery is indicated, he performs minimally invasive spine surgery whenever possible. “Minimally invasive surgery significantly decreases the amount of soft
tissue damage compared to traditional spine surgery, which helps patients recover more quickly and with few complications,” he says.
“Seeking help is difficult for a lot of adults. Often when a patient is in pain, it can make them feel vulnerable and scared. I cherish that people trust me in those moments.”
Christopher Tucker, DO, is a pain management specialist and the founder of NTO’s interventional pain management clinic. He is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain management.
Dr. Tucker explains that spinal cord stimulation technology is advancing rapidly, giving physicians options for better and more selective treatment algorithms and is proud to announce the addition of Melissa Murphy, MD, who is leading the spinal cord stimulator program. Along with these advancements, there are treatment alternatives available to prescription pain medications. These include; spinal injections, radio frequency ablation of select nerves and spinal cord stimulation. All of which treat pain at or near its origin which can reduce or alleviate the need for pain medications/opioids.
“I’m blessed to help make a real difference on the pain someone has been suffering through, sometimes for years. Most patients don’t require surgery, and I’m in the frontline of providing nonsurgical care.”
Melissa Murphy, MD, MPH is a fellowship-trained, double board-certified interventional pain physician. She performs spine and peripheral joint injections, non-surgical knee pain treatments, radiofrequency ablations, sympathetic blocks, spinal cord, and dorsal root ganglion stimulation, kyphoplasty, and certain cancer pain therapies.
Dr. Murphy says spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion stimulation are revolutionary in helping patients with chronic back pain, even after surgical intervention. Taking a holistic approach to pain management, she views injection and
radiofrequency ablation as part of a multimodal treatment plan that may include physical therapy, stress reduction,
nutrition, and more.
“Being able to help patients alleviate pain quickly and witnessing their progress are the reasons I come to work every day.”
Raul Llanos, DO is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. His interests include musculoskeletal medicine and fluoroscopically guided spinal injections.
He says pain medications can be helpful in the short-term, but interventional injections and procedures targeted to the area of pain can potentially bring pain relief for a long time, depending on a patient’s condition. He notes that depending on a patient’s symptoms, a combination of treatments may be recommended, as well as lifestyle modification, physical and occupational therapy, and manual therapy (osteopathic, chiropractic, acupuncture, therapeutic massage).
“I enjoy finding the best treatment option for each patient to help with their discomfort. I love when patients tell me that they are able to return to doing the activities that they enjoy with less pain because of the treatment I helped provide,” Dr. Llanos says.
Culture of Caring with a Servant’s Heart
NTO’s commitment to excellence equals their passion for creating a culture of caring throughout the practice. The team listens and talks with patients, getting to know them as people, and their caring reaches beyond this to support all the communities they serve. For example, NTO supports the nonprofit Christ’s Haven for Children and provides free bi-annual sports physicals at local schools. Their physicians also volunteer once a month at GRACE in Grapevine, a nonprofit medical clinic, and their doctors are official team doctors for eight area high schools.
