Dr. Eric Underwood, O.D.
When you need your vision checked, it can be difficult to know which practice and optometrist will give you the best care. You want one eye doctor who can treat various conditions and see all of your family members—you want to get all your eye care under one roof. That’s where Texas State Optical Riverstone steps in. The practice is new to the Sugar Land area, but Dr. Eric Underwood brings his experience and expertise in the TSO network to the Riverstone community with a personalized touch.
New, Advanced Technology
The TSO Riverstone location opened a few months ago, which means that the practice has the latest that optical technology has to offer. Using cutting edge retinal imaging and diagnostic equipment, Dr. Underwood is able to detect signs of eye diseases early, making treatment much more effective. In addition, Dr. Underwood uses the most updated digital refraction system to help him determine each patient’s prescription accurately while reducing the stress they experience. This technology also allows him to take precise measurements of the eyes to get a more exact fit for lenses.
On top of the impressive diagnostic equipment, TSO Riverstone offers the best in optical wear with over 800 frames and sunglasses. Eyewear options include popular brands like Prada, Gucci, Tory Burch, and Tiffany & Co., and more fashion-forward lines from Europe. In addition, patients can get specialty eyewear and contacts, as well as Transitions lenses to give even more advanced options. With so many choices, patients are able to pick the perfect frames that will help them not just see better, but also look better too.
Compassionate Eye Care for the Whole Family
Unlike some optometrists who cater to a particular kind of patient or age, Dr. Underwood—who is a father to two young children and is fluent in Spanish—enjoys serving patients of all ages from infants as young as six months to aging adults, including patients with special needs. He has special interests in dry eye and ocular surface disease, specialty contact lenses, pediatrics, and infections and minor injuries to the eye. You can feel secure that you’ll get quality care for all your vision needs for the entire family at TSO Riverstone.
Dr. Underwood and the staff at TSO Riverstone don’t just work in the community, they live in the area too! As a new addition to the Sugar Land area, he says, “We want to become part of the community identity.” To accomplish this, Dr. Underwood and the staff are dedicated to providing the highest quality eye care, one patient at a time. They listen to each patient’s individual medical history and needs, adjust and explain treatment options fully, and turn patients into partners in promoting their eye health. These important relationships with patients enable them to change their patients’ lives for the better.
Making a Difference
Dr. Underwood has been part of the TSO family for over eleven years and has been practicing optometry in Houston for over five. Starting as a general manager of a TSO location for two years, he found that optometry provided the perfect combination of his interests in science, healthcare, and problem solving. A proud graduate of the University of Houston College of Optometry, Dr. Underwood has found his work in optometry rewarding with each individual patient. He says, “We depend on our vision for almost everything we do. By addressing each patient’s visual needs, we can help improve their overall quality of life.”
A few years ago, one patient, who was a college baseball player, was diagnosed with a progressive disease and suffered significant sight loss. He had to quit school and quit playing baseball, what he loved most. “When he came into my office, we were able to fit him in custom contact lenses. He was able to get back into school and continue to play baseball,” Dr. Underwood adds. His compassionate and expert care can have the same impact on you as well.
Outside the Office
When he’s not helping patients improve their eye health and sight, Dr. Underwood is often spending time with and cooking for his family and friends. His wife’s job as a teacher was what brought them down to Houston over a decade ago, and they have stayed ever since. They have been blessed with two children, who joined their family through adoption. He says, “I really enjoy watching them grow up together. They have a special bond and have brought so much joy to our lives.”
He also has a deep love of traveling, which started when he participated in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program in high school. As part of that program, he lived with a host family in Madrid for a year, helping him develop fluency in Spanish and a love of other countries’ cultures. Now, he and his family enjoy taking trips together around the world.
Whether you are looking for a comprehensive yearly exam, have vision issues, or need your contact prescription updated, TSO Riverstone is the practice that can address all your family’s specific needs.
