Christopher Bell, MD

Dr. Christopher Bell is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is currently the Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program, serves on the Medical Executive Committee, and is past president of the medical staff at Medical City Dallas. In addition, he is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Texas Surgical Society, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

A Dallas native, Dr. Bell earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at Texas Tech University and completed a residency in general surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas. He furthered his clinical skills in a laparoscopic and bariatric surgery fellowship at UT Southwestern.

In his practice Dr. Bell uses the LINX Reflux Management system to relieve acid reflux disease and gastric sleeve surgery for weight loss. In both these procedures he employs the robotic-assisted laparoscopic da Vinci Surgical System. This surgical platform permits the surgeon to operate through a few small incisions with great precision and control. Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery performed with the da Vinci System minimizes postoperative pain, leading to less narcotic use and faster recovery.

Dr. Bell emphasizes that it is essential for patients to remember, however, that the surgeon performs the operation, assisted by the robotic da Vinci System which always remains completely under the surgeon’s control.

He points out that one of the most exciting advances in treating acid reflux disease is the use of the LINX System, a revolutionary treatment for patients diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). During this procedure Dr. Bell places a flexible ring of small magnets around the patient’s lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The strength of the magnets helps keep the LES closed to prevent reflux, yet when the patient swallows, LINX opens to allow food and liquid to pass through.

Studies have shown that 85 percent of patients were free from daily dependence on reflux medication after LINX treatment.

For weight loss, Dr. Bell uses the gastric sleeve procedure, again with the assistance of the laparoscopic da Vinci Surgical System. In this operation, Dr. Bell removes part of the stomach to form a banana-sized stomach or “sleeve.” During  the process, he removes the part of your stomach that produces the hormone that boosts your appetite. With this sleeve, about 1/10 the size of the regular stomach, you’ll feel full sooner than normal and will eat a lot less, which helps you lose weight.

Dr. Bell points out that this weight loss also helps control other diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, reducing the need for daily medications.

In addition to the LINX and gastric sleeve procedures, Dr. Bell uses the laparoscopic da Vinci System to perform other surgeries such as hernia repair and gallbladder removal.

Outside his practice, Dr. Bell likes running and fly fishing, and he and his wife enjoy supporting their two sons’ sports activities.
