Margaret E. Mike, MD
More than 70 million Americans suffer from a sleeping disorder, and Dr. Margaret Mike wants to help investigate and solve what is causing you to have these restless nights and sleepy days. Dr. Mike loves to examine and explore the root causes of your sleeping problems. “It is a lot of detective work,” Dr. Mike said, “but it is fun because it is very gratifying, and the patients feel so much better after. People come back and say you saved my life, or you saved my marriage.”
Dr. Mike received her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College. She completed a residency in general neurology at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was there that her interest was stoked to begin learning more about sleep disorders and how a lack of sleep can impact your body in many other ways.
“Sleep is something that, if you are not getting enough sleep or poor quality sleep, can really affect you 24- hours a day,” Dr. Mike said.
A lack of sleep can impact how you interact with other people, and how you think and process concepts throughout the day.
Dr. Mike has board certifications from the American Board of Sleep Medicine, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Board of Electroencephalography and Neurophysiology.
She became so passionate about sleep medicine that she completed a fellowship in somnology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Allegheny University in Philadelphia. “A lot of people who pass the boards didn’t go through a fellowship program, and mine was in the department of neurology, so I learned a lot about not only sleep apnea but other medical disorders, whether it is narcolepsy, sleepwalking, behaviors in sleep, restless legs, periodic limb movements, and insomnia,” Dr. Mike said.
She has been practicing in the Dallas area since 1992. In 1994, Dr. Mike opened a second office and sleep lab in Bedford, Texas. She recently moved both her offices from Bedford and Plano, which she practiced out of for 24 years, to a single location in Carrollton, Texas, on the Baylor Scott & White campus. Her office uses the latest technology to investigate and diagnose sleep disorders and then adapt the treatments to suit her patients unique and specific needs.
Dr. Mike prides herself in being able to educate her patients on their sleep disorders and uses a gentle and patient tone when explaining the disorder and treatment process.
Dr. Mike is a member of the American Sleep Disorders Association, National Sleep Foundation, American Academy of Neurology, Texas Medical Association, and the Dallas County Medical Society. She has been voted one of the “Top Doctors in Dallas” by D Magazine and Fort Worth Magazine eleven times since 2003. Since 2014, she has been voted as one of Texas Monthly’s “Super Doctors” by top Texas physicians in sleep medicine.
