Most of us don’t think about where we would go if we contract a life-threatening infectious disease. Then, when it happens, getting the latest, most advanced treatments from experienced, board certified specialists becomes a top priority. Fortunately for those living in Houston and surrounding communities, Houston Center for Infectious Diseases is always on call.

HCID’s dynamic team of board certified infectious disease specialists treat patients in the hospital and in the office. Their staff includes highly trained and certified nurse practitioners and registered nurses specializing in infusion therapy and wound care.

Everyone at HCID takes pride in offering personalized care by putting patients first. Not only are the services unique to HCID, the quality of service they provide helps set them apart from any other practice in the greater Houston area and all over the country.

Patients who transition from a hospital setting to in-office care can rest assured the medications and treatments are the same as what they may have received at the hospital. In fact, HCID offers some of the newer advanced medications that hospitals often don’t carry.

In addition to various IV treatments being administered in the office, an at-home infusion treatment option is available to patients who don’t want to miss work or who have someone at home to care for.

Founded by Dr. Leonardo Palau in 2000, Houston Center for Infectious Diseases has expanded over the years. Today, with a team of four physicians and two nurse practitioners, HCID treats thousands of people each year who are in desperate need of treatment. In 2018 alone they helped over 24,000 patients in the office. With the demand for their services growing exponentially, they are continually expanding their team of physicians and now plan to add a second office in the near future.

“We remain committed to supporting the greater Houston area with much-needed infectious disease diagnosis and cutting-edge treatments,” says Dr. Palau. “There are few places in Texas like us.”

“Every day is a good day here,” says Dr. Palau. “It’s a joy to come to the office and provide lifesaving medicine to patients who are scared and sick. I don’t see myself ever doing anything else. Treating infectious diseases is my life’s passion.”

Although HCID’s patient base is rapidly growing, they still offer new patients a same day or next day appointment. Dr. Desai comments, “Infectious disease diagnosis and treatment isn’t something that can wait. We have the ability to get new patients in to the office for evaluation and treatment as swiftly as possible.”

“Infectious disease is a medical field where you can treat people who are very ill and then often see them get better sometimes in a matter of a few days,” says Dr. Desai. “As a physician, being instrumental in this level of healing is incredibly rewarding.”

Attention globe trotters! Any time you travel out of the U.S. you need to check what disease threats exist and which vaccines are recommended or required. At HCID, their services include vaccines and medications along with all necessary requirements to meet the demands of your country of destination to help make your overseas travel infection free. They share preventive advice and materials to educate travelers.
